Know Your Pet Toxins

Guide to the Main Pet Toxins from Our Veterinarian

Caring for your pet’s health goes beyond routine care visits, dental hygiene, feeding, and exercising. Keep your pet away from toxins. Our Veterinary Hospital team in Mission, and Maple Ridge, BC, share some common and highly-toxic items to help.

Human Medication and Hygiene Products

You might not think your pet would dig into your purse or medicine basket for a treat, but it happens often. Keep your prescription medications put away where your pet can’t reach them.

Medication isn’t the only product to be careful with, though. Even dental care and other hygiene products can be toxic if ingested by your pet. Play it safe, and don’t leave anything within reach.

Human Food

It might be tough not to give in to the begging, but you must forego giving your pet human food, as their digestive systems aren’t designed to process it. This is especially true with grapes, protein bars, garlic, chocolate, and anything containing xylitol.

Veterinary Products

Your veterinarian might prescribe medication during routine care or sick visits. If this is the case, your pet needs them, and they need the specified amount. Keep them locked away so your pet doesn’t go for another “treat” before their next dose.

Household Products

Home improvement supplies, cleaning supplies, toiletries, and more can all be toxic to your pet. Keep them locked up when you’re not using them, and try to keep your pet out of the room when you use them.

Pest Control Items

Your pet might not be a pest, but it can still be hurt if they get into pesticides. Such products can cause organ damage and potentially death.
