Holiday Toxins

Holiday Toxins

At Stave Lake Veterinary Hospital serving Mission, BC, and Maple Ridge, BC, we tend to see an uptick of visitors to our animal clinic around the holidays. Unfortunately, more toxins are available to your favorite four-legged friends with the unique meals, decor, sweets, and other items introduced during the particular season. The best way to avoid a trip to see our veterinarian is by arming yourself with knowledge about what to watch out for. Preventing your pets from consuming or even coming in contact with these items will keep your pet safe and your holidays more stress-free.

Top 10 Most Common Holiday Toxins

If you are worried about your animal getting into dangerous items over the holiday season, it's best to know what to keep your eye out for. Use this list for your reference this holiday season:

  1. Chocolate
  2. Xylitol (a sweetener often found in gum and candy)
  3. Alcohol
  4. Grapes and raisins
  5. Onions and garlic
  6. Macadamia nuts
  7. Poinsettias and other holiday plants
  8. Tinsel and decorations that can be ingested
  9. Potpourri and scented oils
  10. Some over-the-counter medications, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Advil)

Please be aware that this list is not exhaustive. If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, it is essential to contact our veterinarian's office immediately. The sooner we can get to your dog, cat, or another furry family friend, the quicker we can assess the situation and devise a course of treatment.

It may involve inducing vomiting, surgery to remove items, or simply monitoring your pet. While in the office, don't forget to inquire about microchipping. Pets that have ingested toxins will sometimes run because they're scared. A microchip will prevent them from being lost.
