How to Prep Your Pet for Surgery

How to Prep Your Pet for Surgery

Surgery

While it’s not the best news you hope to hear, sometimes surgery could be the best alternative for treating your pet. While surgery can be scary, preparing for it can lessen your anxiety. Whether your pet needs a simple surgery like neutering or a complex surgery such as tumor removal, you have a role to play to make the procedure a success. At Stave Lake Veterinary Hospital, we offer pet surgery services, and here is what we expect pet parents to do before and after the surgery.

Your Role Before the Surgery

You may not do the actual surgery, but you have a role in making the process a success. Before the surgery, here is what you need to do:

  • Bathe your pet: Since your pet will not be able to bathe for several days after surgery, it’s better to bathe your pet the day before the surgery.
  • Avoid feeding the pet: Our vet will advise you not to feed your pet for at least 12-24 hours before the surgery. The reason? Anesthesia reduces the swallowing reflex, and your pet may vomit after or during surgery.
  • Medication: Is your pet taking any medication? Consult with our veterinarian whether you need to stop the medication before the surgery.
  • Vaccination: Is your vet up to date with vaccinations? If not, please ensure your pet is vaccinated to avoid contracting or spreading diseases in the animal hospital.
  • Arrive early: Regardless of the time of the surgery, arrive early during the day of the surgery. Your vet may be running several tests before the surgery, so you need to arrive early to give him time to carry out all the tests.

Even after the surgery, you still have a role to play. Administer the painkillers, antibiotics, and other medications as our vet direct. Seclude the pet from other animals and children to create an environment in which your pet can recover. If you are alarmed by your pet’s behavior or condition following surgery, contact us immediately.
